Bank holiday today? Are bank branches open or closed on January 11, 2025

Kolkata: According to the rules set by the Reserve Bank of India, banks in India are closed for physical business on two Saturdays and all Sundays every month. On these days branches of banks are closed to the public, even if employees of the bank might visit them to carry out work outside the course of normal business. RBI rules stipulate that branches of banks will remain closed for the public on every second and fourth Saturday of every month besides all Sundays.

According to this rule, the branches of banks will be closed today, January 11, 2025. Today is the second Saturday of January. It is also clear that branches of banks will not be closed on January 18 (which happens to be the third Saturday). Banks will close for business on January 25, which will be fourth Saturday of this month.

List of bank holidays in January 2025

The Reserve Bank of India has circulated a list of holidays for January 2025. According to that list, a holiday will be observed on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. It is the day when Makar Sankranti/ Uttarayana Punyakala and Pongal will be observed is several states of India. These happen to be harvest festivals which is widely observed in a traditionally agrarian country like India.

Apart from this, there are a few days when a few states will have special days to celebrate and banks will be closed on those days in a few states. For example, January 15, 2025, is observed as Thiruvalluvar Day and banks will remain closed in the state of Tamil Nadu for this occasion. Banks in this state will also remain closed for business on January 16, 2025, on account of Uzhavar Thirunal (which is another harvest festival). January 23, 2025 happens to be the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and of Veer Surendra Sai, who was a prominent Indian freedom fighter from Odisha.

What can customers do on bank holidays

Unless you have some business that can be conducted only by visiting a branch, transactions can continue unhindered, thanks to the digital service and wide ATM network of Indian banks. Transactions continue on apps, portals of banks as well as ATMs. In fact, these platforms operate every minute of all days.
