Banner of Northeast! Tipra Motha-NPP’s eye on Assam, know the new equation
Preparations for Assam Assembly elections 2026 have started in full swing. According to the trends so far, this election is going to be mainly between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress. There is a fight in the upcoming assembly elections of the state between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State Congress President Gaurav Gogoi. Both the leaders are cornering each other by making allegations and counter-allegations against each other. Apart from this, regional parties like Asom Gana Parishad, Bodoland People’s Front, Raijor Dal and AIUDF are also present, which are participating enthusiastically in this election. These small parties are involved in the alliance of both the national parties (BJP-Congress) either from the front or from the back.
Meanwhile, there are two more regional parties of the North-East, which are going to jump into the election season this time. In fact, Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) President Conrad Sangma and Tipra Motha Party President Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma have joined hands and decided to contest elections in Assam. Both the leaders have held several rallies in the state and are preparing the atmosphere for their alliance. NPP and Tipra Motha are going to contest Assam elections under the banner of Northeast. In such a situation, let us know what is the new equation of Northeast Banner and Tipra Motha-NPP…
Dima Hasao district made center
In fact, shared the stage with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Tipra Motha party leader Pradyot Debbarma in Dima Hasao district of Assam. Thousands of people were present in this rally. In the rally itself, more than a thousand people joined the NPP under the leadership of Daniel Langthasa. Sangma welcomed all the leaders.

Meanwhile, the National People’s Party unofficially declared Daniel Langthasa as its candidate from Haflong assembly constituency. However, the party has not yet officially announced the list of its candidates. Conrad Sangma publicly announced at the rally that Langthasa would be the NPP candidate from the Haflong assembly constituency. However, he clarified that a formal announcement will be made at the right time.
The party has also formally launched its campaign in Assam’s Dima Hasao district with a high-profile show of strength. The most special thing about this rally is that the campaign started under the banner of ‘One Northeast’. In this rally, Sangma advocated North-East unity and staked his claim on Haflong seat.
What is Northeast Banner?
Let us tell you that Conrad Sangma had launched a new political initiative or joint platform named ‘Northeast Banner’ i.e. ‘One North East’ in November 2025. Under this banner, the issues of the seven North-Eastern states have to be raised and expanded. Apart from Conrad Sangma, leaders like Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, former Nagaland BJP spokesperson Mhonlumo Kikon and Daniel Langthasa etc. are included in this banner.
Will BJP support Sangma?
Let us tell you that Conrad Sangma and his party NPP are running the government together in Meghalaya. Both are part of NDA. In such a situation, since NPP is with NDA, will BJP also field candidates from Haflong Assembly? This is the biggest question at this time. However, answering this question, Chief Minister Sangma said that NPP believes in its own political identity and ideology. He said that the party traditionally contests elections alone and made it clear that he would field his candidate in Haflong.
Appeal for unity among communities in the rally
Also, Conrad Sangma said that NPP is not against any political party. Keeping the options open after the Assam Assembly elections, he said, ‘We will take decisions in the best interest of our people after the election results.’ Addressing the people at the rally, Conrad Sangma and Pradyot Debbarma appealed for unity among the different communities of the North-East. Both raised issues with the people regarding their land rights, identity and future. He said that the unity among the people of the region will prevent any external attempt to divide them.

attack on assam government
Before the rally, the local administration of Assam had not given permission to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s helicopter to land. On this he said, ‘If we do not get permission to land the helicopter, we will come by road, if necessary we will come on foot. Whereas Daniel Langthasa, while addressing the rally, spoke on the local issues of Assam. He also addressed public issues from the stage. Remembering the legacy of the martyrs, Langthasa raised his voice regarding the land rights of the people, on which the people applauded loudly.
Daniel Langthasa, who formally joined the NPP, said the rally coincided with the death anniversary of Bir Shambudhan Phonglo. The day Bir Shambudhan Phonglo was martyred is celebrated as Martyr’s Day in this area. Let us tell you that Bir Shambudhan Phonglo had protested against the British rule before independence to protect the land, culture and identity of the people.
Then the issue of water, forest and land came up
Langthasa alleged that in the name of development, the Himanta government of Assam is selling the land of tribals without protecting the rights of the local people. He said the NPP is not against development, industrial projects or increasing infrastructure in the area. However, he stressed that the party opposes the sale or transfer of land without No Objection Certificate (NOC) from local villagers and weakening of the protection of the Sixth Schedule.
Langthasa said, ‘Our fight is to protect our land and our rights. The election battle of Assam will be about identity and constitutional safeguards. Overall, in Dima Hasao district, NPP and Tipra Motha have tried to bring the people here on one platform by raising local issues.
