Barcelona transfer news: Mason Greenwood ‘scouted’ amid three-club battle

Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich reportedly all send scouts to watch Marseille’s Mason Greenwood amid his fast start to life in Ligue 1.

Barcelona are reportedly one of three clubs keeping a close eye on Marseille‘s Mason Greenwood following his quick start to life in the French top flight.

Since leaving Manchester United on a permanent transfer, the former England international has quickly adapted to life in Ligue 1 with Marseille, who are managed by ex-Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto DeZerbi.

The 22-year-old has come up with five goals and one assist in four games in the French top flight, and no player has scored more in the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season; Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola is the closest behind with four.

Greenwood agreed a five-year contract until the summer of 2029 with Marseille, who paid £21.8m to prise him away from Old Trafford after reports of interest from a number of revered clubs.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were among the teams said to have been considering a move for Greenwood, and according to talkSPORTthe Spanish giants retain an interest in the Englishman.

Both sides have supposedly sent scouts to watch Greenwood in action, as have German giants Bayern Munich, but Marseille will not let him go on the cheap for a number of reasons.

In addition to handing him a long-term contract, Marseille also agreed a ‘hefty’ sell-on clause with Man United, who are therefore set to receive a good chunk of any future transfer fee.

Neither Barca nor Atletico firmed up their interest with an official bid over the summer, although that could change next year if Greenwood continues to perform in the same vein.

The 22-year-old has already proven his competence in La Liga, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in 33 appearances for Getafe during a successful loan spell last season.

Greenwood was loaned out to the Spanish side after being told that he had no future at Man United, who initially suspended him in January 2022 after his initial arrest following online allegations.

The Englishman was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault before being further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill, and he was released on bail while Man United temporarily severed ties with him.

Greenwood was then charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempted rape and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, but the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges last year.

At the same time as the CPS proceedings, Man United were conducting their own internal investigation into the matter and were said to have been planning to re-integrate the attacker into the squad.

However, once the Red Devils’ decision was leaked to the public and sparked enormous backlash, the club U-turned on their decision to welcome Greenwood back and told him that his future was away from Old Trafford.
