Bayern Munich trio break goal contributions record
Victory over Wolfsburg on Matchday 33 saw Bayern Munich’s front three of Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz pass the century mark for goal contributions, becoming the first Bundesliga trio to do so since data collection began back in 1988.
It’s no secret that Bayern’s attack has been nothing short of unstoppable this season. Vincent Kompany’s men have steamrolled opposing defences week after week, and, after breaking the record for most goals scored by a team in a single Bundesliga campaign, The record champion’s attack laid claim to yet another accolade.
Although the encounter with Wolfsburg on Saturday evening was in many ways an outlier given how Bayern struggled for long stretches against a resolute Wolfsburg defence, squandering several clear-cut chances as the match went on, a stunning goal from Olise ultimately proved enough to secure the victory.
That strike proved to be a particularly special one – not just for the manner in which it went in – but as it also meant that, for the first time ever, a single trio of players has surpassed 100 goal contributions in the Bundesliga.
That goal took Olise up to 34 for the season (15 goals, 19 assists), which, when combined with Kane’s 38 (33 goals, five assists) and Díaz’s 28 (15 goals, 13 assists) makes exactly 100 combined.
What’s more, discounting assists and taking only goals into account, across all competitions the front three’s tally stands at 101 goals for the campaign, making them the most prolific attack in Europe, with Olise contributing 21 of those, Kane 54, and Díaz 26.
If that wasn’t enough, Olise, Kane and Díaz have now also become the most prolific attacking trio in Bayern’s club history, surpassing the previous record set back in the 1972/73 season. Back then, the legendary trifecta of Gerd Müller, Uli Hoeneß and Willi Hoffmann combined for 99 goals. Müller led the way with 66 strikes, followed by Hoeneß with 22 and Hoffmann with 11.
Despite this staggering goalscoring feat, the all-time European record – set 10 years ago by Barcelona during the 2015/16 season – will probably remain out of reach. That term, the famous triple-threat of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar, scored an astonishing 131 goals between them, leaving the football world in awe of one of the greatest attacking threats ever conceived of in the sport.
Esteemed, long-serving manager of English giants Arsenal, Arsène Wenger, once said of the South American trio: “I think that – besides their unbelievable talent – they also have a great understanding and strong chemistry with each other. They have a fantastic connection. It looks like they simply enjoy playing together,” which is certainly a sentiment that very much applies to Bayern’s front-three this term.
With two competitive matches remaining this campaign – a final-day clash at home to Cologne and the DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart – Olise, Kane and Díaz still have the chance to add to their tally and further cement what has already been an historic season.
