Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha out for ‘weeks’ due to adductor strain

New Delhi: Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha will be on the sidelines for a few weeks after sustaining a torn muscle during international duty. The Portuguese midfielder suffered an injury to his right abductor while he trained with his national side while taking part in the UEFA Nations League.

Palhinha has undergone an assessment with Bayern’s medical team, and the club have stated that the 29-year-old is expected to be absent in the upcoming few weeks. Palhinha had to withdraw from the Portuguese side last week due to his injury and returned to his club.

Palhinha has missed Portugal’s thumping 5-1 win over Poland that saw the team reach the quarter-finals as well as their 1-1 draw with Croatia. The star midfielder’s injury comes at a poor time for Bayern as they face busy fixtures in the coming time, playing eight games in a span of 28 days.

Vincent Kompany’s side will be facing Augsburg in the Bundesliga this weekend before playing Paris Saint-Germain on Monday for the UEFA Champions League. The Bavarian team is currently at the top of the Bundesliga table and are ahead of RB Leipzig with a gap of five points.

They will then play Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker in the Bundesliga and Bayer Leverkusen in the final 16 of the DFB Pokal. Bayern had previously missed their other star midfielder, Aleksandar Pavlovic, who has been on the sidelines since October following a broken collarbone, though the 20-year-old has returned to train with the first team. In the current first team of Munich, Joshua Kimmich, Konrad Laimer, and Leon Goretzka are the ones who are fully fit, and a lot of the onus of the team’s overall performance now will lie on them.

Palhinha had joined Bayern Munich back in the summer, coming from Fulham for an initial deal of £43.1m. So far he has made 13 appearances across all competitions for the German club.
