Twitter in splits as fan’s fortunes tumble while attempting catch to turn ecstasy into injury

Injuries are commonplace in any outdoor sport such as cricket but rarely do fans become victims of it, and even less so by their own accord. Yet, such was the case in the BBL Qualifier at Bellerive Oval on Tuesday when a fan nastily tripped while trying to hold on to a Mitchell Owen biggie.

‌Hobart Hurricanes got off to a blistering start after being asked to bat first by Sydney Sixers in the Qualiifer courtesy of a Mitchell Owen blitzkrieg at the top of the order. The breakthrough star of the campaign muscled 36 runs off just 15 deliveries to continue his evolution as an opener, smashing three boundaries and as many sixes in the proess. The cameo had the entire Bellerive Oval buzzing with excitement as they cheered the purple brigade on but it was not all smooth sailing for one particular fan.

On the fourth ball of the third over, Owen pounced upon a short ball by Ben Dwarshius and sent it sailing over the midwicket fence with a scintillating pull shot. As the Kookaburra dropped into the stands, a fan was all ready on the stairs to catch the white rock but the plan quickly backfired. The ball could not nestle itself into the fans’ mitts and popped out immediately but when he tried to scramble after it, the stairs became an obstacle and a painful tumble followed that left the fan lying on the ground in the stands, hurt, embarrassed, and utterly disappointed.

Twitterati, unsurprisingly, did not shy from extracting entertianment from the man’s misery.

Have you ever seen someone so heartbroken over dropping a catch?
