BCCI announces ₹131 crore reward for India’s T20 World Cup win
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced a cash reward of ₹131 crore for the Indian men’s cricket team after their historic triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The squad, led by Suryakumar Yadav, secured the title with a commanding victory over New Zealand in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The announcement marks a significant increase from the ₹125 crore reward that the board had granted following India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024 under Rohit Sharma. With this latest reward, the BCCI has raised the incentive by ₹6 crore, recognising the team’s exceptional performance and historic achievement.
India’s victory also created a new milestone in international cricket, as the team became the first nation to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup three times.
Historic win in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad witnessed a memorable night for Indian cricket as the team delivered a dominant performance in the final against New Zealand.
Batting first at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India produced one of the most explosive batting displays seen in a T20 World Cup final. The team posted a formidable total of 255 for 5, putting immense pressure on the opposition.
The innings was powered by strong contributions from the top order, with each of the first three batters scoring half-centuries. Their aggressive approach set the tone early and helped India build a massive total that proved difficult for New Zealand to chase.
India eventually sealed a comprehensive victory, sparking celebrations among players and fans across the country.
The triumph carried emotional significance as well. The same stadium had been the venue where India suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup final. This time, however, the night belonged entirely to the Indian team.
Sanju Samson shines in tournament
One of the standout performers of the tournament was Sanju Samson, who played a crucial role in India’s successful campaign.
The opener delivered consistently strong performances during the knockout stages, registering three consecutive scores above 80 runs. His impressive run of form made him one of the most influential players in the tournament.
Samson’s contributions earned him the Player of the Tournament award, highlighting his importance to the team’s success. His performances provided stability at the top of the order and allowed the middle order to accelerate when required.
The team’s batting depth and aggressive strategy throughout the tournament were widely praised by cricket analysts and fans alike.
Higher reward than 2024 title
The ₹131 crore reward announced by the BCCI reflects the scale of the team’s achievement.
When India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024, the board had rewarded the players and support staff with ₹125 crore. This year’s announcement surpasses that amount, underlining the importance of the 2026 victory.
Apart from winning the tournament again, India successfully defended their title, becoming the first team in history to win back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.
Throughout the tournament, India maintained a dominant record. The team lost only one match in the entire competition, which came against South Africa during the Super 8 stage.
Apart from that single defeat, India remained unbeaten and emerged as the most consistent team in the tournament.
India’s growing dominance in ICC tournaments
The latest victory further strengthens India’s impressive run in international cricket over the past few years.
India’s resurgence in ICC events began with the Men’s T20 World Cup win in 2024, which ended a long wait for a global trophy in the format.
The success continued in 2025 when India clinched the ICC Champions Trophy, reinforcing their position as one of the strongest teams in white-ball cricket.
The country’s dominance has not been limited to the men’s team. The Indian women’s team also achieved a historic milestone by winning the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup last year. Following that victory, the BCCI awarded the women’s squad a prize of ₹51 crore.
At the junior level as well, India secured another major title by winning the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, indicating the depth of talent emerging from the country’s cricket system.
Future tournaments and ambitions
With the 2026 T20 World Cup victory, India currently holds multiple major ICC titles across different formats and levels of the game.
Cricket observers note that this sustained success reflects strong development programmes, competitive domestic leagues and the depth of talent available in Indian cricket.
Looking ahead, the Indian women’s team will compete in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, where they will aim to add another global trophy.
Meanwhile, the men’s team will turn its attention to the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027. If India manages to win that tournament as well, the team could simultaneously hold the T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy and ODI World Cup — a rare achievement in international cricket.
Celebration of a historic achievement
The BCCI’s announcement of the ₹131 crore reward recognises not only the team’s performance in the tournament but also the historic milestone of becoming the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles.
The victory has strengthened India’s reputation as a powerhouse in world cricket and sparked celebrations among millions of fans.
As the team looks forward to future challenges, the 2026 T20 World Cup triumph will remain a significant chapter in India’s cricketing history.
