BCCI delays India’s CT 2025 squad announcement, requests ICC for extension – Report
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to delay the squad announcement for the Champions Trophy 2025. As per the cricbuzz report, Ajit Agarkar-led selection initially expected to announce the team for the tournament by January 12 but they are now likely to request an extension from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The delay in the squad announcement is kind of intentional as BCCI seeks more time to finalise their squad. Ahead of every ICC event, all participating teams are expected to submit their provisional squad at least a month before the tournament but this time the global governing body requested all teams to name their provisional squad five weeks before the start of the Champions Trophy.
“The BCCI, citing recent commitments in Australia for the Test series, is expected to request for more time. It is likely that the provisional Champions Trophy squad will predominantly feature players from the three home ODIs against England” a cricbuzz report claimed.
When will BCCI announce India’s squad for the Champions Trophy?
India’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy is likely to be announced on January 19 while the tournament will start a month later on February 19 with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the opening match. All participating teams can also make changes to their provisional squad before the start of the tournament with prior information to the ICC but it is very likely that India’s squad will be the final one unless there are any injury concerns.
The cricbuzz report also claimed that India’s squad for the home ODI series against England and the one for the Champions Trophy will be almost the same. The squad for the five-match T20I series is likely to be announced on Saturday or Sunday. The selectors are set to retain the same squad that recently played against Bangladesh and South Africa.
