BCCI extended the deadline for retention till November 7 for WPL: Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved the deadline for Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchises to provide the list of players that they wish to retain. While the date deadline was October 15, franchises are now allowed to retain players till November 7.

Cricbuzz has reported that the last date for submission of the final list has been pushed to November 7. Each team can have 18 players in the squad and like in Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchises can drop players each year. The date for holding of mini-auction has not yet been announced.

It is understood also that the franchises will go into the mini-auction with a budget of INR 15 crore. This is in contrast to the previous season where the teams operated with a purse limit of INR 12 crores in the maiden season rising to INR 13.5 crores the season after.

After the next season there is likely to be a mega auction as well as the introduction of an extra franchise, the further report added. Just like in the IPL, the BCCI may also develop a retention policy for the WPL alongside its franchises.

The battle for the championship will, once again, feature five teams: Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz. In the first year which was in 2023, the Mumbai Indians under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur bagged the title, whereas Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore won the title in the second year.

Briefly speaking, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is still to make public information about the calendar for the third Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. However, the expectations are that such a season will take place as per the January-February period of the last two seasons.

The countries for the championship are also unknown. Still, it can be assumed that the BCCI would adopt a similar structure to that of the previous season since it managed to successfully conclude the tournament in two cities – Bangalore and New Delhi. The first season consisted of 22 matches and took place only in the city of Mumbai.
