The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a ₹1 lakh fine on Romi Bhinder the team manager of Rajasthan Royals for violating Indian Premier League (IPL) regulations by using a mobile phone in the dugout during a match.
The incident occurred during Rajasthan Royals’ clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 10 at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Visuals of Bhinder with a mobile phone inside the dugout went viral on social media, prompting swift action from the league authorities.
Violation of IPL anti-corruption rules
According to IPL protocols, strict guidelines are in place to maintain the integrity of the game. Under the Player and Match Official Area (PMOA) rules, team officials are permitted to use mobile phones only in designated areas such as the dressing room.
However, bringing electronic devices into the dugout during a live match is strictly prohibited. Bhinder’s actions were deemed a serious breach of these anti-corruption measures, which are designed to prevent any unauthorised communication during matches.
Following the incident, the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit issued a show-cause notice to Bhinder, seeking an explanation.
Explanation rejected, fine imposed
Despite Rajasthan Royals providing a response to the notice, the Anti-Corruption Unit was reportedly not satisfied with the explanation. As a result, Bhinder was fined ₹1 lakh.
However, considering that this was his first offence, the BCCI decided not to impose a suspension or ban. The leniency reflects the board’s approach of issuing stricter penalties only in case of repeated violations.
No action has been taken against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who was seen sitting beside Bhinder in the viral footage.
Who is Romi Bhinder?
Romi Bhinder has been associated with Rajasthan Royals since the inaugural IPL season in 2008. Over the years, he has played a key role in the franchise’s operations and currently also heads the team’s high-performance centre.
The training facility, located in Talegaon in Maharashtra, focuses on player development and performance enhancement, contributing to the team’s long-term strategy.
Rajasthan Royals’ season so far
The Rajasthan Royals, one of the original IPL franchises and champions of the inaugural 2008 season, have had a strong start to the 2026 campaign. Led by Riyan Parag, the team registered four consecutive wins before suffering their first defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
They are set to face Kolkata Knight Riders in their next match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 19.
Conclusion
The incident highlights the strict enforcement of IPL’s anti-corruption protocols and the importance of maintaining discipline within restricted areas during matches. While Romi Bhinder has avoided a ban for now, the penalty serves as a reminder to all team officials about adhering to league regulations to uphold the integrity of the sport.
