BCCI reacted to the ongoing speculations regarding Gautam Gambhir
New Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now reacted to the ongoing speculations regarding Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia says that the news of Gambhir’s removal from the coach post is completely baseless. It is known that recently there were reports that after the defeat in the two-match Test series against South Africa, a board official had talked to former Indian batsman VVS Laxman about becoming the coach of the Test team.
Gambhir has a good record in limited overs and under his leadership the team has won one ICC and one ACC trophy. But after losing 10 test matches against military nations, Gambhir’s style as a coach in red ball cricket is being questioned. The report had claimed that someone holding an important position in BCCI had informally talked to VVS Laxman and tried to know whether he was interested in becoming the coach of the red ball team. However, it was revealed that Laxman was content with the post of Head of Cricket at the Bangalore-based Center of Excellence.
Now Saikia has adopted a clear stand regarding Gambhir. He said, this news is completely wrong. This is completely based on speculation. Some reputed news agencies are also broadcasting it. There is no truth in this. BCCI has directly denied this. Whatever people may think, BCCI has not taken any action. This is someone’s fabricated story, there is no truth in it and I cannot say anything other than that it is factually incorrect and baseless news.
Gambhir’s contract with BCCI is till the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup. But it was being claimed that there is still a debate going on in the corridors of BCCI over whether Gambhir is suitable to take charge of the red ball team for the remaining nine Test matches of the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. India had drawn the five-match Test series 2-2 against England. In 2026, the Indian team has to play two test matches against Sri Lanka and tour New Zealand in October. Then a five-match Test series has to be played at home against Australia in January-February 2027. However, it has become clear from Saikia’s statement that the coach has the full support of BCCI.
