BCCI to announce the squad for ICC champions trophy and England ODIs on this date!! Check out
The suspense over the Indian teams for the forthcoming Champions Trophy will dissipate on Saturday when the men’s selection committee convenes in Mumbai to finalize the squad. India ODI captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will address the media after their meeting to make the squad announcement.
The Ajit Agarkar-led panel will also announce the squad for a three-match ODI series, which is to precede the Champions Trophy next month.
India have been drawn in Group B alongside host Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh for the marquee tournament, which will be returning after last being played in 2017.
The tournament will begin on February 19 in Karachi with Pakistan facing New Zealand. India will begin its campaign a day later from Dubai, taking on Bangladesh.
While Rohit Sharma is likely to lead the side, there are some worries about the availability of Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah has been nursing back spasms, which he suffered during the fifth Test match of the India-Australia series earlier this month. The BCCI has currently not released any statement regarding the status of the pacer and his latest injury issue.
Bumrah has denied a report of being advised not to rush his competitive comeback and to take bed rest. “I know fake news is easy to spread but this made me laugh. Sources unreliable,” Bumrah wrote on X.
It would be interesting to see if BCCI selectors consider Karun Nair’s name for the marquee tournament or even for the England ODIs, given his superb form in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Nair has scored 752 runs for Vidarbha in seven innings of the domestic one-day competition. Last 33-year-old Nair played two ODIs, with the last being against Zimbabwe back in June 2016.
There is also some talk about the potential selection of Yashasvi Jaiswal as a backup opener. Jaiswal has played Tests and T20Is for India but is yet to make his outing in the ODIs.
