BCCI was forced to appoint Shubman Gill as captain in place of Rohit.

New Delhi: There is always a special excitement about captaincy in Indian cricket. Now that Shubman Gill has become the captain of Test and ODI and is also the vice-captain in T20, it is clear that he can soon take over the captaincy of all three formats.
Do you know that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had already planned to make Shubman Gill the future captain? A former selector has shared an interesting information about this.
The scheme was started in 2023
Former Indian selector Salil Ankola recently told in an interview that in 2023 itself, the board had considered Shubman Gill as the successor of Rohit Sharma. Gill was at the best of his game that year, including a double century in Tests and several centuries in ODIs. However, despite being affected by dengue during the World Cup, he scored more than 350 runs.
Ankola’s big revelation
Salil Ankola said on Vicky Lalwani’s YouTube channel, ‘We had decided in 2023 itself that Gill will become the captain when the time comes.’ He further said, ‘The selectors not only listen to the opinion of the coach and captain, but also take the opinion of senior and retired players. Everyone agreed that Gill is the right choice.
captain’s long tenure
Indian cricket generally has a tradition of having only one captain. After Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma was given the captaincy of all three formats, but his age was above 30, so it was clear that his tenure would be limited. On the other hand, Gill is only 26 years old. Considering his maturity and leadership abilities at such a young age, BCCI has decided that a single face will take charge of the team for long-term leadership.
Display of excellence in England
When Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, no one had any doubt as to who would be the next captain. Gill got the captaincy and scored 756 runs against England in his first series, scoring four centuries at an average of 75.40. After this he drew the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. While he missed the South Africa series due to injury, the team’s defeat confirmed that Gill has now become an important pillar of the team.
