After retiring from T20 International (2024) and Test cricket (2025), both these legends are now focused on the 2027 ODI World Cup. BCCI has prepared a very busy and ‘ODI-heavy’ schedule for this ‘Mission 2027’, so that the ‘Ro-Co’ pair can maintain their momentum. ‘Power-packed’ schedule of 18 ODI matches in 2026. According to reports, the Indian team will play a total of 18 ODI matches in the year 2026. The special thing is that BCCI, along with other cricket boards, is also considering converting some T20 matches into ODIs so that preparations for the World Cup can be strengthened. Major series and schedule (2026): June 2026 (vs Afghanistan): 3-match ODI series at home. (1st ODI: June 14, Dharamsala; 2nd ODI: June 17, Lucknow). July 2026 (vs England): Tour of England, where 3 important ODIs will be played (Birmingham, Cardiff and Lord’s). September 2026 (vs Bangladesh): 3-match ODI series (India tour of Bangladesh). September-October 2026 (vs West Indies): Home grounds The thrill of 3 ODI matches. October-November 2026 (vs New Zealand): Tour of New Zealand. According to reports, ODI matches can be increased here by reducing the number of T20 matches. December 2026 (vs Sri Lanka): The year will end with 3 ODI matches against Sri Lanka at home. Why is this ‘ODI-only’ plan necessary? Rhythm and fitness: After being pulled from Tests and T20s, Rohit and Virat may lack match practice. More ODI matches will help them adjust to the pace of the 50-over format. New Zealand’s proposal: The New Zealand Cricket Board has requested the BCCI to increase the number of ODI matches considering the commercial benefits and fan demand, so that they can see ‘Ro-Ko’ play in their country for the last time. Team Combination: These senior players will combine with Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan and other youngsters for the 2027 World Cup. Sitting is the priority of the team management.
