Before Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana, these mythological films had created a stir, know whether they were a hit or a flop at the box office.
News India Live, Digital Desk: The film ‘Ramayana’ being made under the direction of Nitish Tiwari has become the most talked about film of B-Town these days. Crores of rupees have been staked on this film starring big stars like Ranbir Kapoor (Lord Ram), Sai Pallavi (Mata Sita) and Yash (Ravan). But making films on mythological subjects has always been a ‘double edged sword’. In the history of Indian cinema, there have been many films which either set new records of success or became victims of controversies. Adipurush: Huge controversies and average performance. In recent years, Prabhas and Kriti Sanon’s film ‘Adipurush’ is the biggest example. The budget of this film based on Ramayana was approximately Rs 600 crore. Although the film did well worldwide, controversies over VFX and dialogues hurt its performance. It was considered a successful film, but allegations of playing with the emotions of the audience dimmed its shine. ‘Hanuman’ made a big splash at a low cost. Prashant Verma’s film ‘Hanuman’, released in the beginning of 2024, proved that if mythology is presented in the right way, then the budget does not matter. Made with a budget of just Rs 30-50 crore, this film surprised everyone by collecting more than Rs 300 crore at the box office. The combination of the powers of Lord Hanuman and the modern era was greatly appreciated by the audience. Kartikeya 2 and the magic of Kantara. Nikhil Siddharth’s ‘Kartikeya 2’, incorporating mythological beliefs and mysteries, had achieved tremendous success in the Hindi belt as well. Based on the search for the existence of Shri Krishna, this film registered a big success in a small budget. At the same time, the way Rishabh Shetty’s ‘Kantara’ presented local beliefs and divine power, made it the biggest cult hit of the year 2022. If we talk about the old times, ‘Luv Kush’ released in 1963 and Dara Singh’s ‘Bajrangbali’ are still fresh in people’s minds. Technology was less in that period, but the devotion and purity was so high that these films are considered standards even today. Now it remains to be seen whether Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Ramayana’ will be able to learn from the mistakes of ‘Adipurush’ and achieve a position like ‘Baahubali’?
