Before the formation of the new government in Bangladesh, speculations for the post of President intensified, discussion increased about Yunus.
The politics of Bangladesh is once again at a turning point. The developments that started after the change of power in August 2024 are now entering a new phase. The general elections have been completed and now all eyes are on February 17, when BNP chief Tariq Rehman is going to take oath as the Prime Minister. Along with this, another name is in the center of discussion – Nobel Prize winner Mohammad Yunus. The question is arising whether he will be given any big constitutional post in future?
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024, the command of the country was taken over under the interim arrangement. With the support of the army, Mohammad Yunus was made the advisor to the interim government and he carried out the administrative work during the transition period. During this, he emphasized on maintaining stability and strengthening the institutions. Now that the elected government is going to be formed, the discussion has intensified whether Yunus will get any formal role in the new system.
Can one become President?
There are speculations in social media and political circles that Mohammad Yunus can be given the responsibility of an important post like President. However, no official announcement has been made on this yet. Humayun Kabir, associated with BNP, has clarified that at present no final decision has been taken regarding any post.
He also said that the priority of the new government is to create an inclusive and balanced team, in which responsibilities will be decided on the basis of qualification and experience of MPs and leaders. Currently the President of Bangladesh is Mohammad Shahabuddin, so no clear indications regarding any change have emerged yet.
International image and prospects
Political analyst and author David Barjman believes that if Mohammad Yunus is made the President, then the country can benefit at the international level. Yunus’s global identity and experience in economic matters can strengthen Bangladesh’s foreign policy. Although Barzman also claimed that this issue has been discussed between Tariq Rehman and Younus, but these speculations have been rejected by both the parties.
What is Yunus’ wish?
Amidst all these discussions, the press secretary of Mohammad Yunus has made it clear that he has no special interest in politics. It has been told that he does not aspire for any constitutional post and wants to stay away from active public life and devote his time to personal goals. Yunus himself has not given any public statement on this subject. He has only indicated that he is completing the process of transfer of power and will always remain supportive of the country’s progress.
At present the situation is not completely clear. Only after the formation of the new government will it be decided whether Mohammad Yunus gets a new role or he stays away from public life. It is certain that his credentials and experience are considered important in Bangladesh politics. In the coming days, it will be interesting to see whether he holds a formal post or whether he will continue to contribute to the development of the country in the role of a guide.
