Bellingham buys stake in Birmingham Phoenix franchise

Birmingham: Jude Bellingham has expanded his sporting footprint by investing in franchise cricket, acquiring a 1.2% stake in Birmingham Phoenix. The move marks a rare crossover between elite football and professional cricket.

The investment, reportedly valued at close to £1 million, has been secured through equal share allocations from Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Knighthead Capital Management.

Ownership structure remains intact

Despite Bellingham’s entry, Warwickshire continues to hold majority control of the franchise with a 50.4% stake. Knighthead Capital, which also owns Birmingham City, retains a 48.4% share.

Birmingham Phoenix, based at Edgbaston, is one of the eight teams competing in The Hundred, a tournament that has increasingly attracted global investors and high-profile personalities.

Growing global interest in The Hundred

The franchise was among those put up for sale last year, with Knighthead acquiring a significant stake for around £40 million. Bellingham’s involvement adds further star appeal to the league, which continues to expand its global reach.

The project has already drawn interest from prominent sporting figures, including Tom Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, who is linked to the Knighthead group.

Personal connection to cricket

Beyond financial investment, Bellingham’s move reflects his personal interest in cricket. The 22-year-old is known to be a keen follower of the sport and even played cricket during his younger years.

He has previously expressed admiration for Ben Stokes, once stating that cricket would be his preferred alternative career path.

Strong ties to Birmingham

For Bellingham, the investment also carries emotional significance. Having grown up in the West Midlands and developed through the ranks at Birmingham City, he described the move as a way of giving back to the city.

He acknowledged the role Birmingham played in shaping his career and life, stating that he feels a sense of responsibility towards the community.

Focus on youth and community

Bellingham emphasised the importance of encouraging young people to participate in sports, highlighting how different disciplines can offer varied opportunities.

His role in Birmingham Phoenix is expected to extend beyond ownership, with plans for involvement in community engagement and development initiatives across the region.

Conclusion

Jude Bellingham’s investment in Birmingham Phoenix underscores the growing intersection between different sports and the increasing appeal of franchise cricket. Combining personal roots with professional ambition, the move signals both a business opportunity and a commitment to community development.
