Criticism of Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Lakshmi Bhandar’ and Yuva Saathi Yojana
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Lakshmi Bhandar’ scheme is considered a major ‘masterstroke’ behind the Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) strong hold in West Bengal. Under this scheme, women in the state are given cash directly into their bank accounts. This scheme has played a major role in organizing women voters in Bengal in favor of TMC.
What is the plan?
Lakshmi Bhandar Yojana was first launched in West Bengal by Mamata Banerjee’s TMC government in 2021. Initially, general category women were paid ₹1,000 and SC/ST women ₹1,200 per month. In the February 2026 election budget, this amount was increased to ₹1,500 for general category women and ₹1,700 for SC/ST women. At present approximately 24.2 million women are benefiting from this scheme.
