Bengal government’s Sports Minister Arup Biswas has resigned from his post over the chaos that broke out at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday during the program of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi. In a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Biswas said he was stepping down to ensure a fair and independent investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accepted the resignation of state Sports Minister Arup Biswas.

Angry fans vandalized the stadium

It is noteworthy that thousands of fans gathered at the Salt Lake Stadium on December 13 and were eagerly waiting for Argentine star Lionel Messi. Many fans had bought expensive tickets for this, but when Messi reached the stadium, a crowd of VVIP people surrounded him. A human cordon was formed around Messi due to politicians, police officers and VIPs. In such a situation, the audience was not even able to glimpse him. Angered by this, fans vandalized the stadium.

When the situation went out of control, the police had to resort to lathi charge. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed to restore order. After this uproar, Messi left the stadium before the scheduled time. The main organizer of the event, Shatadru Dutta, has been arrested in this matter. The arrests followed riots and vandalism at venues over high ticket prices and limited access to the football icon.

A four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the vandalism at the Salt Lake Stadium. West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has constituted a four-member SIT comprising senior IPS officers. The Chief Secretary said that DCP Bidhannagar Anish Sarkar has been suspended for dereliction of duty and departmental proceedings have been initiated. He said that a show cause notice has been issued to Bengal Sports Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha and the services of Salt Lake Stadium Chief Executive Officer DK Nandan have been withdrawn.
