Chhetri’s love affair with goals continues as BFC demolish MBSG- Talking points

Sunil Chhetri headlined the Bengaluru FC win over Mohun Bagan SG as he became the highest-ever goal scorer in the history of the Indian Super League.

Chhetri scored a penalty in the 51st minute to create the history passing Bart Ogbeche with 63 goals in the process.

Edgar Mendez and Suresh Wangjam were the other scores as Bengaluru won 3-0 to continue their winning run and marched to the top of the points table edging Punjab FC on the goal difference.

Here are the major talking points from the game:

#5 Historic night for Sunil Chhetri at home

Sunil Chhetri added another milestone to his name as he became the highest-ever goal scorer in the history of the Indian Super Legaue. His penalty in the 51st minute meant that he crossed Bart Ogbeche who has scored 63 goals in 98 games.

Coming with 61 goals in the season, Chhetri needed three goals to get to the record. He scored two against Hyderabad FC in the last game equalizing the record.

With 11 assists to his name, Chhetri now has a total of 75 goal contributions and will look to add more going forward in the season.

#4 What next for Jose Molina?

Since losing the Durand Cup final to NorthEast United FC, Mohun Bagan has started ISL poorly too. They drew the first game against Mumbai City FC, barely managed to win against NEUFC, and were outplayed today by Bengaluru FC.

As the coach of the one of the most expensive teams in the league, Jose Molina is sitting on can of worms at the moment and if the results don’t start coming soon, there can be a sack incoming for the Spanish coach.

#3 Benglauru move to the top of the points table

Bengaluru FC is enjoying a good start to the season winning three consecutive games. Three wins mean that they are only unbeaten teams in the league along with Punjab FC and have cemented their place at top of the table.

What makes them more formidable is that they are yet to concede a goal with Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and his defence nullfying attacks from opposition.

The attack has been good with seven goals in three games and contributions from almost everyone.

#2 The duel between Vinith and Subhashish Bose

Youngster Vinith has made an impressive debut this season with a goal in the debut game and multiple chances created in the following games. He was up against MBSG skipper and defensive maverick Subhashish Bose today in an exciting battle.

The experienced defender was constantly on the heels of young attacker tackling and marking him throughout.

On couple of instances, Bose got better of Vinith but the youngster replied with a nutmeg in the 30th minute.

Overall, Vinith looks very promising and his duel against Bose proves that he is someone to watch out for.

#1 Explosive start from Bengaluru FC

The first 20 minutes were one of the best displays of football in ISL by any team.

From the first whistle, Bengaluru FC was in charge and raided the Mohun Bagan SG defence.

In the seventh minute, a free-kick close to corner almost went in as Vinith Venkatesh curled one towards Vishal Kaith.

Minutes later, Benglauru scored the first goal with Edgar Mendez volleying the header from Nikhil Poojary.

BFC were relentless with more chances being created from both sides and another goal came in 20th minute when Mendez’s cutback fell to Suresh Wangjam, who finished expertly to make it 2-0.
