BGT: Ravi Shastri picks surprising opening partner for Jaiswal

Mumbai Mumbai. There is still doubt whether Rohit Sharma will play the first Test against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy or not. There are reports that Rohit's wife Ritika Sajdeh is pregnant and the delivery date is going to clash with the Perth Test. Amidst this ambiguity, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has imagined Team India's playing XI for the first Test and has kept Sharma out keeping in mind his condition.

If Rohit Sharma is out of the first Test of India vs Australia, then the responsibility of captaincy will fall on vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah. But the headache will not end here. Sharma's absence will highlight the void in the opening slot. Team India does not have many options available and keeping this in mind, Ravi Shastri has suggested the name of Shubman Gill for this position. Gill usually comes at number 3, but he also has experience of opening. The youngster started his international career by opening for India, that too in Australia. Thus, according to Shastri, Shubman Gill comes in as a legitimate option.

“It's a tough job and the selectors have a choice,” Shastri said of the ICC review. “You can push Shubman (Gill) back down the order and he has opened in the past in Australia. “Otherwise , you then have to make a choice. Easwaran has not performed that well (for India A in Australia). But it depends on how he is batting in the nets, how Rahul is batting in the nets. But the option of Shubman Gill is also available.”
