Indian tailenders continued to frustrate the Australians in the morning session of Day 5 at the Gabba as the last wicket pairing of Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep survived four more overs to take their partnership to 47 before the visitors succumbed to 260 all-out. The crucial cameos from the duo had already proved clinical the previous evening in avoiding the follow-on, and their further resilience on Wednesday before rain arrived only furthered hope of the Men in Blue saving a lost Test match. The fact that Josh Hazlewood was ruled out of the Test match with a calf injury only made things work for the Men from Down Under and forced captain Pat Cummins to hand the Kookaburra to Travis Head to ease the workload on the frontline bowlers. The part-time spinner just five deliveries to end Akash Deep’s memorable knock of 31 but the wicket only bookended a mini-saga brewing from the previous over.
