Rahul failed to convince Bhupen; Bora will join BJP on 22nd, Himanta has set all the equations.
Assam Politics: A new turn seems to be coming with the resignation of former Assam Congress Committee President Bhupen Bora. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday claimed that he will join BJP on February 22. He also said that a large number of Congress leaders will join BJP along with him.
Let us tell you that Bhupen Bora had resigned from the Congress party on Monday. However, after persuasion by the top leadership, he withdrew his resignation and said that he would reconsider his decision. It is reported that Rahul Gandhi is also among those who convinced him. However, on Tuesday, discussions about his joining BJP started surfacing.
Nitin Nabin gave the green signal
In his statement, Himanta said that National President Nitin Nabin has already approved his joining. He is welcome in BJP. He said that Bhupen Bora will be given the full respect he deserves. Joining BJP will be a homecoming for him, as it is a party for people like him who do not follow his father’s legacy of politics.
Himanta Biswa Sarma reached Bora’s house
Earlier, Sarma visited Bora’s house in Guwahati’s Ghoramara area where his wife and son performed aarti and welcomed the chief minister. The Chief Minister had earlier said that BJP’s doors were open for Bora and promised to help him win the assembly elections from the reserved seat.
What did Bhupen Bora say earlier?
Earlier in the day, former Assam Congress president Bhupen Bora said that if the central leadership asks, he will give his final decision on withdrawing his resignation by Tuesday night. Bora said he would like to discuss several issues with his well-wishers, close associates and the people of Lakhimpur district before taking a final decision.
Why was Bhupen Bora angry with Congress?
Without naming any Congress leader, Bora said that he wants to remain in the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), but not in the APCC(R). This was clearly a reference to the party’s Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain. He said that I have made this clear in my resignation also.

Bora alleged that several senior leaders had suggested his name as the party candidate for the by-election to Samguri assembly seat, but he was not given the ticket. After Hussain was elected from Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, by-election on Samguri assembly seat became necessary. The party ticket was given to his son Tanjeel Hussain, who lost the election to BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sharma.
Rahul did not listen to Bora!
Bora claimed that many senior Congress leaders had opposed the alliance with AIUDF in the 2021 assembly elections and he had written several letters to the party high command in this regard. The alliance ended after the elections and Hussain benefited the most from it in the last Lok Sabha elections, when he won the seat by defeating AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal by a record margin.
