Bibek Debroy, Chairman of PM Modi's Economic Advisory Council, dies at the age of 69

New Delhi. Economist Bibek Debroy, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed away on Friday. He was 69 years old. According to the information, Bibek Debroy died this morning. He was admitted to AIIMS.

Debroy (69) was educated at Ramakrishna Mission School (Narendrapur), Presidency College (Kolkata), Delhi School of Economics and Trinity College (Cambridge). He worked at Presidency College (Kolkata), Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (Pune) and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (Delhi). He also served as the Director of the Finance Ministry's UNDP project on legal reforms. He was also a member of NITI Aayog till June 5, 2019. He wrote or edited many books, papers and popular articles. He has also been a consultant or contributing editor to several newspapers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Debroy's demise and called him a great scholar. He wrote in a post on X that 'Dr. Bibek Debroy was a great scholar, well-versed in economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and other diverse fields. Through his work he left an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape of India. In addition to his contributions to public policy, he loved working on our ancient texts and making them accessible to young people.' He also shared a picture of himself with Debroy.
