Big action by Sonbhadra Police, one accused arrested with illegal ganja

Under the direction of Superintendent of Police Sonbhadra Abhishek Verma, under the guidance of Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Anil Kumar and the supervision of Area Officer Randhir Kumar Mishra, in view of the upcoming Holi festival, in view of the upcoming Holi festival, an intensive vehicle checking campaign was being conducted by the Chopan police station and SOG team.

On 03.03.2026, at around 01:15, an attempt was made to stop DCM vehicle number OD17AA5980 coming from Dala on Varanasi-Shaktinagar road, but the driver did not stop the vehicle and tried to run away at high speed towards Salkhan. While being chased by the police team, the said vehicle was stopped about 100 meters ahead of Patvadh Indian Petrol Pump and searched as per rules.

During the search, a total of 85 kg 300 grams of illegal ganja was recovered in 04 plastic sacks hidden behind the glass scrap loaded in the vehicle. The estimated value of the recovered ganja is estimated to be around ₹17 lakh. The estimated value of the total recovery including the vehicle is around ₹37 lakh. A mobile phone and cash were also recovered from the possession of the accused.

On the basis of recovery and arrest, advance legal action is being taken by registering a case at Police Station Chopan under MO No. 86/2026 Section 8/20/27A/29/60 NDPS Act.

Arrested accused-

Banshighar Behera, son of Ravi Behera, resident of village Kandlimunda, police station Handapa, district Angul (Orissa).

Wanted accused- 02 persons (name-address unknown)

The accused told during interrogation that he was the driver of the said vehicle. On 02.03.2026, he was going to Firozabad after loading glass scrap from Orissa. On the way, two unknown persons came on a motorcycle at Boudh Bihar market in Orissa and offered to pay ₹ 30,000 in exchange for delivering the ganja to Varanasi. Both the persons opened the tarpaulin of the vehicle and hid the ganja in four sacks among the glass scrap and left, saying that they would meet in Varanasi.

The team that made the arrest mainly included Inspector-in-charge Akhilesh Kumar Mishra, Chopan, Police Inspector Rajesh G Choubey, SOG in-charge, Sonbhadra district, Police Inspector Ramgyan Singh Yadav, Inspector General Ajay Singh Yadav, Inspector Virendra Kumar Saroj, Inspector Sachchidanand Mishra, Inspector General Satish Patel, Constable Ritesh Singh Patel, Constable Driver Ajit Yadav and the SOG team.
