Big Alert FASTag: Now the big rule related to Toll Tax is changing from February 1, KYV verification process withdrawn

New Delhi. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a big decision to further simplify the FASTag system in the country. The government has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification process will not be applicable on the new FASTag to be issued for cars, jeeps and vans from February 1, 2026. The purpose of this change is to reduce the delay in issuing and using FASTag, the hassle of repeatedly asking for documents and complaints from users. Till now, after issuance of FASTag, KYV was required to verify the vehicle.

In this process, despite having valid documents, drivers had to repeatedly upload RC, send photos and get the tag re-verified. This caused delay in FASTag activation and users had to face unnecessary hassles. Under the new rules, NHAI has completely handed over this responsibility to the banks.

Now banks will check all the information related to the vehicle before issuing FASTag. Vehicle verification will be done through VAHAN database and if information is not available there, verification will be completed on the basis of Registration Certificate (RC). This means that after the tag is activated, no separate KYV process will be required.

What was KYV and why was it removed?

Know Your Vehicle (KYV) was an additional verification step in the FASTag system to ensure that the tag is linked to the correct vehicle and no incorrect or duplicate tags are being used. However, in practice this process was often causing delays and technical difficulties, due to which NHAI decided to remove it.

KYV not mandatory on new car FASTag

KYV will not be mandatory on new car FASTag after 1 February 2026. All necessary checks will be completed before issuing the tag. Already issued FASTag holders will also no longer need to do KYV regularly. Re-verification will be conducted only in cases where a specific complaint is raised, such as tag being attached to the wrong vehicle, misuse, loose tag or FASTag issued incorrectly.

What will be the benefit to common drivers?

The new rules will make the process of purchasing and using FASTag faster and easier than ever. Now the tag can be used directly as soon as it is taken. There will be no need to upload documents again and again or visit the bank and customer care. Additional investigation will be conducted only in complaint based cases, which will provide relief from unnecessary hassles.
