Big announcement from the government amid the great war in the Middle East, the biggest update regarding grain reserves in the country. – ..
News India Live, Digital Desk: After the deepening war between Iran and America, the sound of food crisis has started being heard globally. The fear of supply chain breakdown has increased across the world, but a big relief news has come for Indian consumers. The Central Government has issued a major update on the latest status of the country’s grain stores (buffer stock). The government has made it clear that foreign wars and global tensions will not affect India’s plate. We have so much stock of rice and wheat that any emergency can be easily dealt with.
India’s plate is safe even in the shadow of war
Rising tensions in the Middle East have created uncertainty in markets around the world. There are reports of hoarding of grains and rising prices in many countries, but the latest figures of the Government of India are reassuring. According to the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution, the stock of wheat and rice in the country’s warehouses is much more than the prescribed buffer norms. This means that there is going to be no shortage of grains in the Public Distribution System (PDS) and the open market for many months to come.
Mountains of grain in warehouses: Data boosts confidence
According to the report released by the government, bumper procurement of Rabi and Kharif seasons has strengthened India’s position. At present the quantity of wheat in the warehouses of Food Corporation of India (FCI) remains much above the prescribed standard. Whereas in the case of rice, India is already self-sufficient and in a situation of surplus. The government says that this buffer stock will not only meet the internal demand of the country, but will also stand as a shield in case of any unexpected crisis.
Preparation to control inflation
In case of war, prices often increase due to impact of import and export, but due to the huge stock available with India, it will be easy to control the prices in the domestic market. From time to time, the government releases grains in the market through ‘Open Market Sale Scheme’ (OMSS) so that retail prices do not rise. Experts believe that after this stock update, there will be stability in the prices of grains in the market and the common man will get relief.
Advice to avoid panic buying
The government’s objective behind making public the information about adequate stock of grains is also to instill confidence among the people. Often amid news of war, rumors spread that rations will run out, causing people to start panic buying (buying more than necessary). The government has given a clear message that the supply will remain smooth, hence there is no need for the countrymen to panic or accumulate ration stock.
