Big blow to DMK in Tamil Nadu, MDMK breaks 9 year old alliance and separates; Hints to go with TVK
A big change has been seen in the politics of Tamil Nadu. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) has formally ended its nine-year long alliance with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). This decision was taken in the General Council meeting of the party.
Although MDMK has not yet officially announced its intention to join the ruling TVK-led front, such indications are emerging given the party’s recent political moves.
DMK accused of weakening the party
MDMK in its resolution said that attempts were made to weaken the party while it was in DMK alliance.
The party alleged that “under a secret plan, a strategy was being hatched to give AIADMK a chance to form the government, in such a situation it was not possible to continue in the alliance.”
TVK welcomed the government
Along with breaking the alliance, MDMK also welcomed the TVK government led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay.
The party appealed to the government to ensure corruption-free governance, protect the interests of Tamil Nadu such as the Mekedatu Dam project and strongly implement election promises.
However, the party did not directly mention joining the TVK alliance in its proposal.
DMK rejected the allegations
DMK termed MDMK’s allegations as completely baseless.
DMK leader Syed Hafeezullah said that it was the party that had given representation to MDMK in the Assembly and Parliament.
He also said that MDMK has become weak only after Vaiko’s son Durai Vaiko was given a prominent role in the party, while Vaiko himself has been opposing dynastic politics for a long time.
Two MLAs will remain with DMK
Despite this decision of MDMK, two party MLAs, who had won the 2026 assembly elections on DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ election symbol, stayed away from the General Council meeting.
Both these MLAs have indicated that they will remain with DMK.
Because of this, even if MDMK joins TVK alliance in future, there will be no immediate impact on the government’s strength in the assembly.
Indications were found earlier also
There were already signs of MDMK leaving the alliance.
The party had recently abstained from voting during the confidence vote of the TVK government. After this, Vaiko, his son and MP Durai Vaiko also had meetings with Chief Minister Vijay and senior leaders of TVK.
Who is with TVK now?
After the separation of MDMK, Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and MDMK are now considered to be with TVK.
Congress is included in the government with two ministers, while VCK and IUML have one minister each in the cabinet. Whereas CPI and CPM are currently supporting the government from outside.
Demand to contest elections alone is also rising in DMK
Amidst this political development, the demand to contest elections alone in future is also increasing within DMK.
MP Kanimozhi was the first to suggest this, after which former Union Minister and MP A. The king also supported this opinion.
Vaiko and DMK’s old relationship
Vaiko was once considered the political successor of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
But in 1993, due to his increasing popularity and M.K. He was expelled from the DMK after he was considered a potential challenge to Stalin.
After this, for years his relationship with DMK was sometimes of cooperation and sometimes of opposition. Now once again Vaiko has created a new stir in the politics of Tamil Nadu by separating his party MDMK from the DMK alliance.
