Big blow to Home Ministry in Bangladesh, resignation of Special Assistant to Mohammad Yunus amid violence

News India Live, Digital Desk: The interim government in Bangladesh, which is struggling with increasing unrest and political violence, has suffered another major setback. Khudabaksh Chaudhary, who was special assistant to the Home Ministry in the interim government of Nobel laureate and chief advisor Mohammad Yunus, has resigned from his post. President Mohammad Shahabuddin has accepted his resignation. His resignation has come at a time when the situation in the country is rapidly deteriorating and political turmoil is at its peak. Khudabaksh Chaudhary, who has previously held the post of Director General of Police (IGP), was appointed Special Assistant to Mohammad Yunus on 10 November 2024. This resignation is the fourth major resignation from Yunus’s interim government. Earlier, in early 2025, student leader and advisor Naheed Islam had resigned. After this, on December 10, 2025, Asif Mahmood Shojib Bhuiyan resigned from the post of advisor in the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperation, and on the same day, Mahfuz Alam resigned from the post of advisor in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The atmosphere of violence in the country is also continuously worsening. Recently, after the death of rebellion leader Usman Hadi, a new wave of violence was seen in Bangladesh. One person was killed in a bomb attack near a church in the capital Dhaka, raising serious security concerns. The angry mob also set fire to the offices of the country’s two biggest newspapers – Daily Star and Pratham Aalo. Along with this, the offices of two cultural organizations Chhayanat and Udichi Shilpi Gosthi were also targeted. Leaders of minority organizations have accused the interim government of failing to stop violence and atrocities against minorities. All these developments are happening at a time when less than two months are left for the general elections in Bangladesh. These elections, proposed to be held on 12 February 2026, will be the first national elections after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in July 2024.
