Big blow to Malayalam cinema: Veteran actor and writer Srinivasan passes away at the age of 69

New Delhi:A very sad news has come out from Malayalam film industry. Senior actor, screenwriter, director and producer Srinivasan passed away on Saturday, December 20 after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at a hospital in Tripunithura in Ernakulam district. 69 year old Srinivasan was unwell for a long time. His demise has deeply shocked not only the film industry but also millions of fans.

Srinivasan was known for his social satire, strong writing and common man characters in Malayalam cinema. His contribution spanned almost five decades, which gave new thinking and direction to Malayalam films.

Actor Prithviraj expressed grief

Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran expressed grief over the demise of Srinivasan on social media. He wrote in his Instagram story,"Farewell to the greatest writer/director/actor. Thanks for the laughs and thoughts! May your soul rest in peace."
His message further deepened the feeling of mourning spread in the film world.

Early life and education

Srinivasan was born on 6 April 1956 in Pattiyam, near Thalassery, Kerala. He received his primary education from Kadirur and later obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics from PRNSS College, Mattanur. After this he took formal film training from the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu, Chennai. This training became a strong foundation for his creative career.

Acting in about 225 films

In his long career, Srinivasan acted in more than 225 films. His characters reflected the thoughts, struggles and humor of the common man, due to which the audience could relate to them. The audience still remembers his roles filled with social commentary.

Srinivasan was also an excellent screenwriter. Films like Odaruthammava Aalariyam, Sandesham, Nadodikkattu and Nyan Prakashan are excellent examples of his writing. Through his stories, he presented issues like unemployment, bureaucracy and the complexities of the middle class with humor and satire.

Also successful in direction and production

He directed popular films like Vadakkunokkiyantram and Chinthavishtaya Shyamala. Apart from this, he was also the co-producer of successful films like Katha Parayumpol and Thattathin Marayathu.

Srinivasan leaves behind two sons, Vineeth Srinivasan and Dhyan Srinivasan, who are active in the Malayalam film industry today. His demise is an irreparable loss to the cinema world.
