Big blow to the makers of The Kerala Story 2 from HC, interim ban on the film
Desk: The makers of the controversial film ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’ have suffered a major setback from the Kerala High Court. The court has currently put an interim stay on the film. The court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to consider the petitioner’s views and take a decision on the matter within the next 2 weeks. Three petitions were filed in the court against the film, in which there was a demand to cancel the censor certificate of the film and stop its release.
The petitioners said that this film is presenting a wrong picture of the state of Kerala and its release may worsen the communal atmosphere. The single bench of Justice Kurian Thomas, while hearing the case, said that prima facie it seems that the CBFC has not acted wisely while giving the certificate to the film.
Therefore, the court directed the CBFC to consider the revision petition presented by the petitioners before the board within two weeks. The court has put a stay on the release of the film until CBFC gives a new order. During the hearing, the High Court said that generally it avoids interfering in the release of a film, but when the content of the film allegedly has the potential to disturb communal harmony, then it has to intervene.
During the hearing yesterday i.e. on 25th February, the court had made it clear that the release of the film can be put on hold until it hears all the parties. The court said that the hearing is still pending, so if the film is released then the petition will become useless.
Earlier during the hearing, the court had accepted that the concerns of the petitioners regarding the film seem legitimate and it is necessary to consider it. Because the film itself is being projected in such a way that it is inspired by true events and even the name of the state is in the title, whereas the story of the film has no connection with Kerala.
‘The Kerala Story 2’ is the sequel of ‘The Kerala Story’ released in 2023. There was a lot of controversy regarding the first film also. Although the film also made bumper earnings. The film has been produced by Vipul Amritlal Shah. ‘The Kerala Story 2’ is directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh. The film was to be released on February 27, but now its release is stuck.
