Big Changes in IPL 2025 Retention Purse Rules, Says Report

With the retention list expected to be released by October 31, there is a huge twist involved in the IPL 2025 retention Purse rules. BCCI has added a total of INR 20 crore to purse value so, each franchise will have a total purse value of INR 120 crore for IPL 2025.

The amount division suggests that a franchise can retain players for more or less than the designated slab, as long as the total amount of the players is equal to or within the designated INR 75 crore retained purse.

According to the retention rules, the franchises can spend only the price quote as per the retention slot. That is the first retention must be INR 18 crore, the second must be INR 14 crore, the 3rd slot must be INR 11 crore, the fourth slot will be INR 18 crore and the fifth slot must not exceed INR 14 crore.

The franchise can choose to pay more than INR 18 crore to the first retention and less than INR 11 crore to the third retention, as long as their total budget adds up to INR 43 crore, the designated amount for three retentions.

“Retention deduction of overall amount instead of fee per player, in this case of 75 Crs irrespective of what amount is paid to 5 players. If the total amount exceeds 75 Crs then the actual amount is to be deducted. In case the amount is less than 75 Crs then 75 Crs to be deducted,” quoted the retention rule.

Meanwhile, some reports suggest that Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to retain Proteas WK-batter Heinrich Klaasen for INR 23 crore which is INR 5 crore more than the first retention slot.

If the franchise retains five players for less than the designated INR 75 crores, the remaining amount will be of no use.

The flexibility given to distribute the retention fee among players will give a significant boost to franchises in negotiating higher or lower bids for players they are keen on retaining.

BCCI has not revealed an official announcement regarding the IPL 2025 mega auction Date and Venue.

With the exact dates yet to be finalized, BCCI has indicated two potential windows to franchises, either the second week of November or the third week of December.

The IPL 2025 Mega Auction will likely be held and is expected to span two days, BCCI is also considering logistical challenges and ensuring the availability of key stakeholders.
