The Supreme Court has granted bail to two accused Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh in the case related to the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in the year 2022. According to the court order, both the accused will be released from custody while the trial of the case continues. This order was given by the bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta after hearing the arguments of both the sides.
What are the allegations against Pawan Bishnoi?
Pawan Bishnoi is accused of being associated with the gang of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and providing logistical support to the crime by arranging the vehicle used in the murder conspiracy. However, his lawyer argued in the court that the main charge against him was only that he had arranged for the Bolero vehicle which was allegedly used in the murder.
What was the debate in the court?
During the hearing, the Supreme Court commented that from security point of view it may be better for the accused to remain in jail. On this, the defense lawyer said that his client has no relation with Lawrence Bishnoi and both have the same surname. He also said that the accused has been in jail for about three years and ten months and no objectionable recovery has been made from him.
State government opposed bail
Opposing the bail, the state government said that the co-accused had made about 41 calls to Pawan Bishnoi to arrange for the vehicle used in the murder. During the hearing, the court also raised the question as to how mobile phones were being used from inside the jail and at what stage is the hearing of the case. It was told by the government that the case is currently in the stage of recording evidence and some protected witnesses have already given statements against the accused.
What argument was given by Jagtar Singh
Counsel for co-accused Jagtar Singh told the court that the cameras installed near Moosewala’s house were installed for the security of his own house. He said that these cameras were not used to conduct recce of the singer’s house. After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the Supreme Court granted bail to Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh.
Sidhu Moosewala was murdered in May 2022
Sidhu Moosewala, 28, was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district in May 2022. At that time he was traveling in his SUV. The responsibility of this murder was taken by Canada-based gangster Goldie Brar, who is considered close to Lawrence Bishnoi.
