Big decision of Central Government, 1 big good news for citizens

New Delhi. The Central Government has taken an important step for the consumers across the country. With a view to make purchasing of edible oils more transparent and easy, the government has decided to prescribe standard pack sizes for major edible oils. The main objective of this change is to control the increasing packaging diversity in the market and to provide consumers with the opportunity to make better informed purchases.

Why was this decision necessary?

In the last few years, different sizes of packs started being introduced in the market by different companies. This made it difficult for customers to understand which product was actually cheaper and which one they were getting a higher price for. Sometimes it was not easy to compare prices properly due to packaging.

Which pack sizes will be valid?

Under the new rules, certain pack sizes have been prescribed for major edible oils. These include packs of 200 ml/gram, 500 ml/kg, 1 litre/kg, 2 litre/kg, 3 litre/kg, 4 litre/kg, 5 litre/kg, 15 litre/kg and 20 litre/kg. These rules will be applicable to mustard oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil, rice bran oil and other major edible oils.

What benefit will consumers get?

The biggest benefit of the new system will be that customers will be able to directly compare the price and quantity of products of different companies. This will reduce confusion in purchasing and help customers understand the value of their money. Apart from this, it will be mandatory to clearly mention not only liters or milliliters but also its equivalent weight on the pack. This will make it easier to understand the actual quantity of the product.

Those who buy small packs will get relief

The government has also ensured that the convenience of consumers with low income or limited budget is not affected. Therefore, packs smaller than 200 ml or 200 grams have been kept out of this system. With this, smaller and cheaper packs will be available in the market like before.
