Big decision of Sri Lanka Cricket Board made Lasith Malinga consultant fast bowling coach
New Delhi: Sri Lanka has appointed Lasith Malinga as consultant fast bowling coach ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed in a statement that Malinga has been appointed on a short-term basis, effective from 15 December to 25 January 2026.
Malinga, who played a key role in the team’s World Cup title win against India in 2014, will now contribute his expertise in the fast bowling department. The 42-year-old Malinga has proved his unmatched bowling ability by taking 107 wickets in 84 T20I matches, and he is especially famous for his death bowling skills.
Since retiring from cricket in 2021, Malinga has worked as a mentor and coach in several T20 franchise leagues. Apart from this, in 2022 he was also the bowling strategy coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team.
The Sri Lankan cricket team is planning to take full advantage of Malinga’s experience to perform well in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka has been placed in Group B along with Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Oman in the global event starting on February 7. The team’s first match will be against Ireland at the R Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo on 8 February.
Sri Lanka recently announced its preliminary squad for the T20 World Cup and will also play home series against Pakistan and England before the World Cup.
