Big decision of the government, ban on TRP of news channels for 4 weeks

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken a big decision regarding the coverage of news channels. The ministry has banned the release of TRP of news channels for four weeks with immediate effect. This step has been taken in view of the highly sensational coverage being shown by some channels while reporting the ongoing war between Israel and Iran.

Order issued keeping public interest in mind

The ministry has directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) not to release television rating points for any news channel for the next four weeks. The government has clarified that this order has been issued keeping in mind the public interest. According to the ministry, while reporting on the ongoing sensitive conflict in West Asia, many channels are showing speculative and provocative content, which appears to be an attempt to create more sensationalism than the seriousness of the situation. The government believes that such a presentation can create confusion and unnecessary fear among the audience.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has also said in its instructions that there is a possibility of spreading panic among the common people due to irresponsible and misleading reporting. Anxiety may increase especially in those families whose relatives or acquaintances live in areas of West Asia where conflict is ongoing. In such a situation, the government says that the media should understand the seriousness of the situation and do balanced and factual reporting.

Competition to achieve TRP

According to officials, one of the main reasons behind this decision is the competition among news channels to achieve TRP. Many channels are resorting to aggressive and sensational presentation to garner more viewers. The government believes that by currently banning the release of TRP, such competition will be reduced for some time and there will be pressure on the channels for responsible reporting.

This decision will also impact the news broadcasting industry and advertising market. Generally, TRP data is released every week and on the basis of this the popularity and viewership of the channels is assessed. Broadcasters, advertisers and media planners use this data to decide on which channel advertising will be more effective.

Now, due to non-release of TRP data for four weeks, this weekly process has come to a temporary halt. It is believed that during this period, news channels will get an opportunity to review their method of reporting, so that more responsible and balanced journalism can be ensured on sensitive international issues.
