Big decision of the government, the limit on air fares will be removed from March 23, now the market will decide the price.
The central government has decided to remove the temporary cap imposed on domestic airfares following the flight disruption in December 2025. This step has been taken after the situation in the aviation sector became normal and operational stability returned, due to which fares can now be decided again on the basis of market.
What did the Civil Aviation Ministry say?
In the order issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, it was clarified that the purpose of the fare limit implemented on December 6, 2025 was to control the abnormal increase in ticket prices at that time and to protect the interests of passengers amid limited flight capacity. During that time, the situation had worsened due to cancellation of a large number of flights and passengers had to face a lot of problems.
According to the ministry, the situation has now improved. The number of flights has been restored as before and the entire aviation sector is functioning normally. In view of this, after review, it was decided that the fare limit will be abolished from 23 March 2026.
In fact, due to the cancellation of many Indigo flights in December 2025, air travel was affected across the country. Due to this chaos, a sudden huge jump in ticket prices was seen. To control this, the government had set a maximum fare limit based on distance, in which the upper limit for a one-way journey was kept at Rs 18,000.
Jet fuel prices rise
In recent times, due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, jet fuel prices have also increased. For this reason, representatives of major airlines like IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet had requested the government to remove the fare cap soon. They said that if this ban continues, they may have to close some routes and postpone their fleet and network expansion plans.
Although the operational crisis has now largely ended, the airlines argued that these restrictions, imposed without a clear timeline, were negatively impacting their revenues. In such a situation, this decision of the government is being considered as a relief for the aviation companies, whereas for the passengers, its effect can be seen in the form of fluctuations in fares in the future.
