Big earthquake in Nepal’s politics! PM Balen Shah’s chair wobbles after resignation of 2 ministers

New Delhi: Prime Minister Balen Shah’s government in Nepal is in trouble just a month after its formation. The political temperature has risen due to the resignation of two ministers from the cabinet and suspension of the Parliament session. Experts are considering this as a real test for Balen Shah. If his government is able to complete its five-year term, a new history will be made in Nepal.

When Nepal’s Home Minister also resigned

According to media reports, the biggest blow came from the resignation of Home Minister Sudan Gurung. He stepped down amid allegations of alleged links with a controversial businessman and share dealings. Gurung had not even completed a month as a minister. After the resignation, the Home Ministry is now directly with PM Balen Shah.

Gurung wrote on social media, “For me, morality is bigger than position. Public trust is the biggest strength.” He said the resignation was necessary for a fair investigation. It is noteworthy that as soon as he became the Home Minister, Gurung had arrested former PM KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in the case of deaths in Gen-Z protests. Then he had said, “No one is above the law.”

Parliament session suddenly adjourned

The very next day after Gurung’s resignation, President Ramchandra Paudel suspended the session of both houses of Parliament on the recommendation of the government. This session was to start from April 30. President’s Office "special reasons" Cited, but in political circles it is being linked to increasing pressure on the government.

On 9 April 2026, Labor Minister Deep Kumar Shah was also removed from the post. He was accused of misusing his position to make his wife a member of the Nepal Health Insurance Board. His removal was recommended by Rashtriya Swatantra Party chief Ravi Lamichhane.

The road to democracy is difficult

Democracy in Nepal has been continuously faltering since the end of the monarchy. Since 2008, 14 governments have changed, but not a single one has been able to complete five years. Political instability has broken the back of the economy. Foreign investment has come to a standstill.

China has given huge loans under the Belt and Road Initiative. The markets are filled with Chinese goods, most of which come in illegally. The biggest challenge now facing Balen Shah is to maintain public trust. That trust has given them power. It remains to be seen how he comes out of this political storm.
