TRAI Report: Penetration of mobile and internet services in India continues to scale new heights. According to the Telecom Subscription Report of June, 2026 released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the total number of telephone subscribers in the country increased from 1.343 billion in May to 1.348 billion by the end of June. These figures make it clear that lakhs of new customers have been officially connected to the country’s telecom network in just one month.

Expansion into rural-urban areas

Tele-density, indicating the availability of telephone connections per 100 people in the country, has also registered a good increase. By the end of June, this ratio had increased to 94.31%, as against 94.02% earlier in May. According to TRAI data, telephone subscribers in urban areas increased to 792.0 million, while the figure in rural India also increased to 556.0 million, proving that connectivity is strengthening even in the hinterlands.

Record-breaking increase in broadband and wireless connections

The growing demand for faster internet has also led to new milestones in the number of broadband subscribers. By the end of June, the total number of broadband connections in the country has increased to 1.087 billion. Additionally, total wireless subscribers, including mobile and fixed wireless access (FWA), increased to 1.3 billion in June from 1.29 billion in May, a monthly increase of 0.45%. The number of mobile wireless subscribers has increased to 1.282 billion.

Dominance of private companies

The Indian mobile market continues to be dominated by private telecom companies with a share of 92.73% of total mobile subscribers, while state-owned companies BSNL and MTNL have a combined share of 7.27%. At the same time, 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) subscribers have increased to 12.9 million, with a significant proportion of rural users. On the other hand, a total of 14.7 million applications were made by consumers under Mobile Number Portability (MNP) to switch operators in June.
