Big New Year gift! Huge fall in CNG-PNG prices, know how much you will save from January 1
Gas Prices 2026: The new year 2026 has brought great news for crores of gas consumers of the country. The Central Government has announced a reduction in the prices of CNG and Domestic Pipeline Natural Gas (PNG), which has brought relief to the common man. This decision will come into effect from January 1, 2026, due to which the price of gas will reduce by Rs 2 to 3 per unit. This move will directly benefit motorists and families using pipeline gas at home. What is the main reason for the fall in prices? Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) member AK Tiwari said that the main reason for this price cut is the major change in the ‘tariff structure’ for gas distribution. * Old system: Earlier, gas prices were determined in 3 different zones (200 km, 1200 km and above) depending on the distance. * New system: Now it has been simplified and limited to only 2 zones. Under the new system, the rate of Zone-1, which earlier ranged from Rs 80 to Rs 107, has been rationalized to just Rs 54. This simple rule will be implemented uniformly across India, which will bring transparency in prices. How will its benefits reach the common consumers? This decision will affect about 40 city gas distribution (CGD) companies operating in 312 geographical areas of the country. The government has given clear instructions that the full benefit of reduction in tariff should reach the common consumers. The board of directors itself will monitor whether the companies are implementing the price cuts properly or not. This will not only benefit the drivers of private vehicles and taxis, but will also reduce the kitchen expenses of households using piped gas. What is the long-term objective of the government? The main objective of the government behind this decision is to promote the use of natural gas across the country. Natural gas is a clean energy source. For this, the government is also in talks with the state governments to reduce VAT and expand the gas pipeline network. Due to low rates and easy availability, it is expected that there will be a huge increase in the use of clean energy in the country in the coming times.
