Big relief for taxpayers, Income Tax Department settled more than 2 lakh pending appeal cases, know what will be the benefit?
News India Live, Digital Desk: The Central Government has achieved a major achievement in resolving the long-running disputes between income tax payers and the department. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Friday announced that the Income Tax Department has successfully disposed of a record more than 2 lakh pending appellate cases during the financial year 2025-26. This activism of the department has not only reduced the mental burden of the taxpayers, but has also increased the inflow of trapped revenue into the government treasury.
Effect of ‘Action Plan’ to reduce pendency
A large number of cases were pending with the Income Tax Department in which taxpayers had challenged the assessments of the officers. CBDT had prepared a special ‘Action Plan’ to dispose of these cases. Under this, the hearing of cases at the Commissioner (Appeal) level was expedited and the help of technology was taken. The main focus of the department was to resolve the cases of small and medium scale taxpayers on priority basis, so that they could be freed from legal hassles.
Speed gained from faceless assessment and digital hearing
The ‘Faceless Appeal’ system is believed to play a major role in this record settlement. Due to exchange of documents through digital medium and hearing through video conferencing, the time taken in cases has reduced significantly. The aim of the government is that taxpayers do not have to make rounds of the department and the entire process remains transparent. According to the Finance Ministry, most of these 2 lakh cases disposed were those which were pending for the last three to five years.
What will be the benefit to taxpayers?
The direct benefit of early disposal of appeal cases will be given to those taxpayers whose refund was pending or on whom heavy penalty was imposed. After the matter is resolved, many taxpayers will now be able to get their outstanding refund along with interest. Also, the Department has indicated that new versions of schemes like ‘Vivad se Vishwas’ can also be brought in the coming times so that litigation can be brought to the minimum level. If any of your cases is pending, then definitely check the status of your appeal on the department’s portal.
