Ban on data sharing gets temporary relief – Obnews
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Thursday stayed the five-year ban imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on data-sharing between WhatsApp and Meta. This decision has proved to be a relief for the big companies in the technology sector.
Meta welcomed the decision
Meta welcomed NCLAT's decision to partially stay the CCI order and said it will reconsider its next steps. A Meta spokesperson said:
“We will reconsider our next steps. Our focus will be on supporting the businesses that rely on our platform. “At the same time, we are committed to delivering the high-quality experiences that users have come to expect from WhatsApp.”
Heavy fine was imposed on WhatsApp
In November last year, CCI had imposed a fine of Rs 213.14 crore on Meta over the privacy policy of WhatsApp updated in 2021. CCI had taken action against both Meta and WhatsApp, calling it unfair business practice.
The decision was challenged
Meta and WhatsApp had challenged this order of CCI before NCLAT. Now these companies have got temporary relief from the decision of NCLAT.
conclusion
This matter is very important for Meta and WhatsApp because there has been a dispute going on for some time regarding data-sharing and privacy policy. While these companies have got relief from this decision of NCLAT, this matter may become even more interesting in the future.
