Big relief to India amid war with Iran: Special exemption to buy cheap oil from Russia for 30 days, Jairam Ramesh said – how long will the blackmail last?

Washington. America has temporarily relaxed the restrictions for India to buy oil from Russia. According to the news agency report, the US Finance Ministry has relaxed the restrictions for some time, so that India can buy Russian oil stranded in the sea.

US Finance Minister Scott Besant has said that the 30-day relaxation will allow the movement of oil in the global market and will reduce the pressure created by Iran’s attempt to hold global energy hostage.

Besant said on social media that this step is a deliberate short-term one that will not bring any significant financial benefit to the Russian government because it only involves oil that is already trapped in the sea.

It is noteworthy that US President Donald Trump imposed a ban on Russian oil after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, due to which buyers had to look for other options. India is a major buyer of Russian energy and the US has pressured India to stop buying Russian oil in an attempt to reduce the flow of money for the attack.

The Congress on Friday targeted the Modi government over the US Finance Department’s announcement of giving temporary permission to Indian refineries to immediately buy oil from Russia and asked how long will this “American blackmail” continue. Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on ‘X’, “Trump’s new game, told Delhi friend you can get oil from Putin, how long will this American blackmail last?”
US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant posted on Twitter, “To ensure continued availability of oil in the global market, the Treasury Department is granting Indian refineries a temporary 30-day waiver to purchase Russian oil… India is an essential partner of the US, and we fully expect New Delhi to accelerate purchases of US oil.” This short-term measure will reduce the pressure caused by Iran’s attempt to hold global energy hostage. There is currently no response from the Indian government regarding this.
