Contaminated water: 18.93 lakh people fell ill in 5 years
-Deaths in Indore so far 20, administration says 6, compensation given to 18
Bhopal . In Madhya Pradesh, clean water is limited only to government files and speeches. The ground reality is that drinking water is becoming the cause of illness and death of people in the state. The data from the Madhya Pradesh State Climate Change and Human Health Action Plan 2022-27 presents a frightening picture. According to government documents, in just 5 years (2016 to 2020), 18 lakh 93 thousand 673 people in 10 districts of the state were affected by water-borne diseases. All these diseases are such which could have been prevented in time, if the administration had fulfilled its responsibilities.
On the other hand, in Bhagirathpura of Indore, the number of deaths due to contaminated water has increased from 18 to 20. In the report presented in the High Court, the government has admitted only four deaths, whereas an assistance of Rs 2 lakh each has been given to the families of 18 deceased. The administration on Wednesday added two new names to the list made to provide compensation to the family. These include Ramkali Jagadish and Shravan Natyu Khuprao. Officials say that even though 6 people have died due to contaminated water, wherever the death is reported, financial assistance is being cross-checked. Here, at the place where the drainage line work was done, as soon as the Narmada line was commissioned on Wednesday, water started leaking and filling the colony. Water entered the shops. Narmada line has been closed again due to water leaking.
The situation is worst in 2019
The official table shows that the situation was most serious in 2019. In that one year alone, more than 5 lakh 11 thousand cases were registered in districts like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Bhind, Morena, Vidisha. Diarrhea, typhoid, hepatitis and other water-borne diseases continued to plague people, but no concrete improvement was seen from the government. Although Indore’s name is not included in the table, health data and recent incidents clearly indicate that the administration has no control over the water quality in urban areas like Indore, Bhopal, Ujjain and Gwalior. In the past years, a large number of people fell ill due to contaminated water in Indore, deaths occurred and the pressure on hospitals increased, but the accountability of the Municipal Corporation and the Health Department was not fixed.
CAG had already made a big disclosure
Report No. 3/2019 of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has already exposed the government. According to this report, Indore and Bhopal Municipal Corporations supplied contaminated drinking water to 8.95 lakh families. The Public Health Department itself recorded 5.45 lakh cases of water-borne diseases between 2013 and 2018. That means the government knew everything, yet the situation did not improve.
If investigation is done then where is the report?
Jan Swasthya Abhiyan India has directly asked the government whether any investigation was done on the affected families after the reports of CAG and Health Department? If it has been done, why has its report not been made public yet? And if it is not done, then whose responsibility is it?
If there is no clean water, disease is certain.
Jan Swasthya Abhiyan clearly says that if strict decisions are not taken even now, the lives of thousands of people will continue to be in danger every year. Clean and safe drinking water is not a scheme or slogan, but a basic right of every citizen. Now the question is not what is the problem, the question is when will the government wake up and when will the responsibility be fixed.
CM Dr. Mohan spoke on Indore contaminated water incident
Every death is painful, we are not getting into the statistics
Regarding the difference between the death toll in Indore and the number of people who have been compensated, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has said that it is painful for us to lose even one person. We are not getting into its statistics. It is a different matter that they have their own way in the eyes of the administration. The administration has decided the number of dead on the basis of postmortem report, but it is not final. CM Yadav said in BJP state office on Wednesday – Death registration is also done through Municipal Corporation. Whatever numbers come out, the state government will work to provide relief money to the families of the people concerned.
