Big face of Pakistani politics and former Prime Minister Imran Khan is once again in the news regarding his health. Imran Khan, who is in jail, has appealed to the court for release citing his deteriorating condition and poor conditions. The information given by his lawyer in the court has made the matter more serious.
During the hearing in Islamabad High Court, Imran Khan’s lawyer Salman Safdar told that his eyesight has weakened to a great extent. According to him, now only 15 percent of Imran Khan’s vision is left, which means he has lost 85 percent of his vision. The lawyer said that this situation is continuously worsening and the main reason for this is being alone in jail for a long time and eye infection.
Can eyesight come back?
The lawyer also claimed in the court that according to the doctors, the condition of Imran Khan’s eyes has become such that it is not possible to cure them completely. This means that the decrease in their vision may become permanent. This matter was raised very seriously in the court.
Questions raised on solitary confinement
During the hearing, the lawyer also raised questions on the jail administration. He asked why Imran Khan and his wife were being kept in solitary confinement. He said that this situation is adversely affecting his mental and physical health.
Appeal to present complete medical records
The lawyer also told that Imran Khan had to be taken to the hospital several times because proper treatment facilities are not available in Adiala jail. He demanded from the court that the concerned jail officials – IG, Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent – should be summoned. Besides, an appeal was also made to present the complete medical records from the hospital.
During the hearing, Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Sarfaraz Dogar asked the lawyer to focus on the main appeal. However, the lawyer insisted that the petition to suspend the sentence should be decided first. At present, the court has postponed the hearing of this case.
What is the whole matter?
Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are in jail in a £190 million alleged corruption case, known as the Al-Qadir Trust case. It is alleged that he acquired a large amount of land from a real estate businessman. According to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), instead of depositing the money returned from Britain in the government treasury, that money was used to pay the fine of the businessman.
In return, Khan’s trust received a donation. In this case, the court has sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years and Bushra Bibi to 7 years. Now the questions being raised regarding his health are giving a new twist to this whole matter.
