Big step by Central Government: Bumper increase in medical seats

New Delhi. According to data presented in Parliament by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there has been a significant increase in the capacity of medical colleges across the country during the last six years. A large number of new seats have been added during this period at both the MBBS and postgraduate levels, making medical education more accessible than before.

Thousands of new seats added in six years

According to government data, 48,563 new seats of MBBS and 29,080 new seats of MD/MS have been added during this period. The special thing is that the highest annual increase was seen in the academic year 2025-26 itself, in which 11,119 MBBS and 7,619 PG seats were increased. This decision is being considered as a strong initiative towards removing the shortage of doctors in the country.

Direct benefits to health services

This increase in medical seats will not only benefit the students but will also strengthen the health system of the country. Now medical colleges and trained doctors will be available even in those areas where till now health facilities were limited. This has increased the hope of better treatment in rural and backward areas.

no compromise on quality

The government has also made it clear that along with increasing the number of seats, the quality of education is being given top priority. Strict standards and rules are imposed by the National Medical Commission. Through the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) system and improved clinical training, it is being ensured that new doctors are prepared with a high level of proficiency.

Expansion will continue further

The government’s plan does not end here. Approval has been given to add 10,023 more seats in government medical colleges under centrally sponsored schemes between 2025-26 to 2028-29. This will improve the doctor-population ratio and common citizens will get better and accessible health services.
