Big success of Make in India, Indian Army created history, achieved 90 percent self-sufficiency in ammunition.
The Indian Army has created another big record in the direction of strengthening the security of the country. Under the Make in India campaign, the Army has achieved more than 90 percent self-reliance in the field of ammunition. This achievement not only increases the strength of the army but also makes India strategically stronger.
Need for self-reliance in changing circumstances
In today’s world the nature of war is changing rapidly. Now the fight may not be of a few days or weeks but may be long lasting. In such a situation, along with weapons, ammunition and logistics support become most important. Understanding this truth, the Indian Army has made self-reliance the basis of its strategy.
90 percent indigenous production in ammunition
According to Indian Army sources, more than 90 percent of the nearly 200 types of ammunition and precision weapons used in the army are now being manufactured in the country. Whereas earlier there was dependence on foreign supplies and old production infrastructure, now the indigenous industry is meeting the needs of the army. Due to this, the risk of supply interruption in case of emergency has been significantly reduced.
Big lessons learned from global wars
In recent years, conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict and the Hamas-Israel conflict have made it clear that a strong stock of ammunition is necessary to fight a long-term war. Taking lessons from these experiences, the Indian Army emphasized on accelerating domestic production and today its results are visible.
Make in India also strengthens industries
Army has prepared a big order package worth about Rs 16 thousand crore under Make in India. In the last three years, ammunition orders worth about Rs 26 thousand crore have been given to indigenous companies. This includes both government and private sector companies. This has not only increased the defense production capacity of the country but also created new employment opportunities.

Future preparation and strong strategy
In the coming time, the Army is working on increasing domestic availability of raw materials, development of critical components like propellant and fuse, modernization of production infrastructure and strict quality standards. Coordination between research institutes, industries and the army is being further strengthened.
Overall, achieving 90 percent self-reliance in ammunition is a historic step for the Indian Army. This has not only increased the capability for long-term military action, but also made India’s national security and strategic confidence stronger than ever.
