Big update on 8th Pay Commission: Demand for only 7 pay levels instead of 18 intensifies

New Delhi. Discussions regarding the 8th Pay Commission of the Central Government have intensified. The Joint Committee of Employees Organizations (NC-JCM) has submitted an important memorandum to the Commission demanding major changes in the existing pay structure. If this proposal is accepted, then a major improvement can be seen in the salary structure of lakhs of government employees across the country.

What is the new demand?

Currently, a total of 18 pay levels are applicable under the 7th Pay Commission, due to which the salary and promotion process is considered complex. NC-JCM has suggested that these 18 levels should be reduced to only 7 big pay scales, so that the entire system can be made simple and transparent.

How will the new pay-level system be?

According to the proposal, new grades will be created by merging several pay levels.

A new pay scale 2 will be created by merging pay levels 2 and 3.

A new pay scale 3 will be created by combining pay levels 4 and 5.

Similarly, there is a suggestion to create bigger grades by combining pay levels 6 to 10.

In this way, there is a plan to prepare a total of 7 broad pay scales.

What will be the benefit to the employees?

If this proposal is implemented then there can be many benefits for the employees. As the promotion process will become simpler and faster, the salary structure will become more transparent, the problem of being stuck in the same post for a long time will be reduced, and there will be a clear path for career growth.

Why is this change considered necessary?

Employee organizations say that the existing 18 pay-level system is quite complex, which affects not only the employees but also the administrative process. Therefore the need to simplify it was felt for a long time.
