Big upset in 1982 Filmfare, Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna paled in front of Naseeruddin Shah.

New Delhi . In the history of Hindi cinema, the Filmfare Awards ceremony of 1982 is counted among those memorable occasions when acting got more importance than stardom. In that era, stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Kamal Haasan and Dilip Kumar were dominant, but Naseeruddin Shah won the Best Actor award on the basis of his strong acting.

In the year 1981, Amitabh Bachchan’s superhit films like ‘Naseeb’, ‘Laawaris’ and ‘Yaarana’ were released. At the same time, films of Rajesh Khanna, Kamal Haasan and other big stars were also well liked among the audience. Despite this, Naseeruddin Shah won the Best Actor award for the film ‘Chakra’ at the 29th Filmfare Awards.

That year, in the Best Actor race, Amitabh Bachchan got nomination for ‘Laawaris’ and ‘Silsila’, Rajesh Khanna for ‘Dard’ and Kamal Haasan for ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’. However, the judges considered Naseeruddin Shah’s realistic and impressive acting as the best.

Not only Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the film ‘Chakra’. She left behind veteran actresses like Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha and Rakhi. ‘Chakra’ received nominations in a total of six categories, out of which the film won three awards. Interestingly, Amitabh Bachchan’s famous films did not receive any Filmfare Award that year.

‘Chakra’ was the mirror of society

Director Ravindra Dharmaraj’s film ‘Chakra’ shows the struggles of poor families living in the slums of Mumbai in a very realistic manner. In the film, Smita Patil plays the character of ‘Amma’, who struggles to raise her son after the death of her husband. During this time, he meets the character of ‘Lukka’ played by Naseeruddin Shah. This film, which shows poverty, social inequality and the harsh reality of life, is counted among the important films of Indian parallel cinema.

  • Even today ‘Chakra’ is included among the best films of Naseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil’s career. Due to the nuanced acting and strong story, this film has achieved the status of a classic over time.
