Bihar’s Makhana becomes global brand, big jump in farmers’ income
Makhana of Bihar has become a global brand, there has been a big jump in the income of farmers. In the financial year 2025-26, Makhana of Bihar has emerged as a strong brand at the national and international level. Makhana has gained global recognition due to the joint efforts of the state and central government. Due to government schemes and export initiatives, there has been a significant increase in the income of Makhana farmers, which has given a new impetus to the rural economy.
Mithila Makhana reached Dubai
Mithila Makhana, which received GI-tag for the first time, was sent from Purnia district to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) by sea route. This historic consignment of 2 metric tons had left on 21 January 2026. This export was done with the cooperation of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of Bihar and APEDA, Patna.
Successful exports through sea route have proved that Bihar is now meeting the standards of international quality, packaging and logistics. Due to this, farmers and entrepreneurs have started getting new markets.
Farmers benefit from formation of National Makhana Board
The Central Government constituted the National Makhana Board in September 2025, which has provided huge benefits to about 5 lakh Makhana farmers of the state. Bihar produces about 85 percent of the makhana in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this board in Purnia on 15 September 2025. The formation of the board has strengthened processing, trade, value addition and exports.
Makhana Development Scheme worth Rs 476 crore will get a boost
The Central Government has approved the Central Makhana Development Scheme from 2025-26 to 2030-31, the total cost of which is Rs 476.03 crore. Under this scheme, research, quality seeds, training of farmers, modern harvesting-processing techniques, branding, marketing and exports will be promoted.
Makhana farming area increased three times
Bihar Agriculture Minister Ramkripal Yadav said that under government incentives and the Chief Minister’s Horticulture Mission, there has been a rise in Makhana production. While in the year 2012, the area under Makhana cultivation was around 13,000 hectares, now it has increased to around 35,000 hectares. Darbhanga, Madhubani, Katihar, Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj, Supaul, Madhepura, Saharsa and Khagaria districts are the major centers of Makhana production.
Brand Makhana moving towards Bihar
Expressing happiness, Agriculture Minister Ramkripal Yadav said that the financial year 2025-26 has proved to be historic for the Makhana of Bihar. Export of GI-tagged Mithila Makhana by sea route to Dubai is a big achievement. National Makhana Board and Makhana Development Scheme have given a new direction to production, processing and export.
Due to this, the income and standard of living of millions of farmers is improving. The Government of Bihar is continuously striving to establish Makhana as ‘Brand Bihar’, so that the state can become a major center of Makhana production and export at the global level.
